As the title suggests, discovering the perpetrator in this complex story is a difficult task for Inspector Lynley, due in part to the independent actions of the demoted Barbara Havers? Is she congenitally unable to follow a direct order? Why can't she appreciate that she could be facing felony charges for her act of insurordination, rather than being given another chance to redeem herself?

Even more of an impediment to finding the correct person is the fact that the two victims appear to have no common links. As Elizabeth George weaves together many disparate elements, the reader is drawn to the inescapable and horrifying identity of the murderer, while Helen and Tommy each discover and accept some inconvenient truths. Enjoy!
