Like many others, I read this book because of the hype. In fairness, I don't care for romance books and didn't realize this was classified as such.
I don't understand how this book is in a mainstream book store and not an adult book store. EL James leaves NOTHING to the imagination. I also found myself feeling angry....not only with the characters in the book, but also with myself for wasting my time reading it.
There's no story here folks, unless it's about a weak young girl with so little self-worth she's willing to do ANYTHING for a man; and a man who is very willing to take advantage of that young girl to satisfy HIS needs.
One aggravating thing I found in this book was Ana's request for more out of the relationship (more normalcy, more love, more respect, etc.) Grey's mantra of "I'm trying "more." I never once read him remotely trying to do anything for Ana's request of "more." Everything he did that he claimed was "trying" was done for his own needs, not Ana's.
Another is Ana always going back for more and making excuses for him. The end, while odd, was something that I kept hoping for throughout the book (which is why I kept reading.)
The relationship is one of the most abusive (physical and emotional) and unhealthy I've ever read. I shudder to think the message it sends to young women.
