This western reminds me of an old Zane Grey tale about a young woman who joins a cattle drive while disguising her gender. The first ½ of the book is about how Sam/Samantha tries to keep her secret and the rest of the book concerns itself with Sams fear that Matt will betray her to the trail boss.

An interesting interplay in the story (taking place soon after the Civil War) is the difference between Sams older brother who lost an arm in the conflict and Matt (Samantha's love interest), who is emotionally scarred from the experience. It was shocking to see how young some of the soldiers were in the time of the war; 12 was not an unusual age for a Confederacy soldier!

I think this is a great story for a teen; no sex-before-marriage is told in the tale. I enjoyed the book for what it is light escape reading.
