I don't quite understand the controversy about this book. It's an engrossing, fictional tale of migrants struggling to make it to their "promised land" of the USA. They each have a traumatic backstory that leads then to this journey, and the character development is excellent. As the reader, I had great empathy for every one of then. I am not fluent in Spanish, and kept the Google Translate app close by, for the many Spanish frases scattered throughout the sook. It greatly enhanced the story for me.
