A sensitive romance dealing with aftereffects of domestic violence, this book was probably startling when it was published in 1988. Sadly, the great revelation is something we're all too used to hearing about today. Dana the librarian and Tony the small town hero do reach their happily ever after when she draws on his support to confront her past. I thought her ability to completely relocate without any kind of support system was a stretch and I tend to like my escapist reads to be a little less dark.

To my surprise I liked the Mayberry title even better than Woods' book. Lucy's single parent pregnancy is presented realistically rather than romanticized and the hero is a delight. The Italian community was fun to read about. I was in tears by the end.
