I don't read many memoirs, but occasionally, I do and am amply rewarded. Samantha Bee is the Most Senior Correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and this is her collection of essays.
She writes about growing up with a candid, hilarious outlook on life. She comes from a long, long, long line of divorced couples and so when she gets a step-mom, she has to rethink what she has been taught. Her step-mom was not an only child like Samantha, so Samantha talks about how she's treated differently by her and how more is expected of her now as well.
I think the funniest essay for me was The Birds and The Bees. Samantha's parents were friends with another couple who just got married. They know Samantha's parents are going camping in the same area as their honeymoon, so they are nice and say they should hook up while they are there... sure everyone says that but they don't MEAN it! Samantha's parents crash this couples honeymoon......and it is so funny. I laughed with tears sliding down my face when they tried to explain to Samantha the birds and the bees. Simply hysterical!
She also talks about penis envy - and how many of her friends were victims of random penis exposure. For some reason, people like to show Samantha their penises. She's seen so many of them that when she isn't exposed, she is disappointed. She has a job in high school for a video vending machine company, and one of the things returned alot was homemade pornography.
She has alot of other jobs too, and crazy antics as a teenager that will leave you in stitches. Samantha Bee's writing is refreshing, entertaining, page-turning, and laugh-out-loud funny. I highly recommend it!!
