From normal life to - to what?

That question doesn't quite get answered in this novel, but it's mighty spooky for all that.

Even in the first three chapters, supposedly about normal life, the tone is diffident. There's menace from the outside, animal smells from the humans and lots of metaphors about the primordial, the primitive.

The author slips in little clues to the reader about what's happening or happened in New York City, but not to the characters until uncertainty hits them right in the face.

A satisfying and eerie reading experience.
