Wow! This book's plot sneaks up on you with its complicated twists and turns, finishing with an explosion of confetti! There are so many layers to this World War II story as the characters are confronted with sexism, censorship, social stigmas, military requirements, death, and mental anguish. The story focuses on the struggles of a photojournalist, Jessica May, and her love interest, Dan Hallworth, who is a paratrooper, and a young orphan girl, Victorine, taken in and cared for by the military. This complex story is told with alternating character chapters and multiple time periods, with reader emotions running from love and happiness to deep grief and darkness. So as you devour this novel, be prepared to feel World War II and all of its effects.
