Richards presents an interesting look at the history, views, and beliefs of people teaching the Bible. This book explains that what you believe about the Bible will play an enormous role in your teaching of the Bible. Lots of great information and ideas, however it seemed to be heavily focused on the ability of man instead of how we can involve the power of the Holy Spirit as we teach the Bible.
The most interesting thread of the book is exploring the question of why studying the Bible doesn't seem to lead to change in such a large number of people in the Church today. I liked how he described an old member of the Church who knows the Bible inside out and will challenge church leadership on various topics, but can't get along with anybody. Where is the disconnect? A very interesting example that I have witnessed in the Church. I think the disconnect is simply forgetting the importance of the Holy Spirits work and thinking that by studying the Bible you are a good Christian.
John 5:39-40
You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me (Jesus), yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
The church in America simply needs to connect with Jesus through the Holy Spirit for a real change to occur.
