Set in post WW II, the plot turns a youthful friendship between two men'a 'have all,' and a 'have nil''into one of jealousy and hatred. This is the thin line between love and hate. Between the two is Mr. have-all's wife. This is also about the power of money used to gain control: and of avarice. Much like Martha Stewart, the 'have all' cannot afford to lose even a small portion of his wealth. Thus, he reneges on a promise to underwrite his friends dream project, thereby forcing retaliation that ultimately thwarts his own designs. This is a strong novel, but not quite up to the measure of 'A Separate Peace.' Be prepared for twenty plus pages of lecture on sex and the Catholic Church. It's not the âIndian Summerâ of Victor Herbert!
