About friendships that aren't typical and being your own person. I loved that the main character was a dragon. It really is a cute story about a family of dragons who are excited for Crispin to start breathing fire. When the day comes it doesn't happen and that leads to interesting events and an unexpected friendship. I like the message of the story about being needed even when your abilities are different than expected or at first desired.
