As soon as Rachel Sparhawk Lindsey sees the soldier lying wounded near her home, she knows that she must somehow help him even if he is wearing the enemy's uniform.

After witnessing the horrors of the war and making his thoughts clear to his vicious commander, Jamie Ryder deserts the British. Believing he is dying and sure the sweet young woman is an angel, Jamie turns himself over to her care.

Yet this simple act of kindness on Rachel's part will change her life forever. While Jamie is recuperating, her husband's brother arrives with news of a large reward for Jamie. He also demands that Rachel believe her husband is dead, and wants her to be "grateful" to him for seeing her through the winter.

But it is to Jamie that Rachel is grateful. They begin a journey to a beautiful love that heals both their wounds and opens the door to happiness. But this is a time of war, Jamie is the enemy and their love is a fragile thing, susceptible to her husband's return and her brother-in-law's ruthless schemes for the reward.
