Book Review of Dead of Night: Eternity in Death / Amy and the Earl's Amazing Adventure / Timeless / On the Fringe

Generally in an anthology you have about an equal number of good stories and dogs, usually with the scales tipped toward the former. This is the first time I've come across a parasitic one - an excellent (as always) Eve Dallas short by J.D. Robb is used to carry around three bloodsucking ticks that serve no purpose other than to irritate and annoy. The other three obviously were written as fillers and have the feel of being scribbled on a deadline, what with the cliches, wandering plots, worthless scenes and gratuitous sex thrown in in hopes that it might distract. Anyone who picks up this book can stop at the first story and burn the rest. If Eternity in Death appears in another J.D. Robb collection of shorts, I will gladly purchase that and get rid of this volume, but meanwhile I have to hang onto it so my Eve Dallas collection is complete. I very reluctantly give this 2 stars, only because it rankles to have to give any J.D. Robb story the appearance of being less than appreciated, as I rate her story 4 stars while the other three get 1 apiece.
