If you think you know where this thriller about a young couple and their families is going, following a real case that remained in the news for a long time, you're wrong. It has several unexpected moves and more depth than you might expect.

But McTiernan setting the book in the middle of Vermont was a mistake. There aren't rich women routinely wearing and shopping for designer clothes in that area, with a social-climbing "set." That is way out of place. Maybe the author, who was born in Ireland and lives in Australia, should deserve bravery points for trying a setting she doesn't know well, but in this case it didn't work well.
