I have not yet seen the book but Alexandria Schwartz's essay reviewing it neatly also shares with readers his earlier works, how this one is different, and what elements from his own life informs Mr. Lee as he writes. To begin with, the protagonist goes to Asia, rather than being a person of Asian descent adapting to American Life ('Native Speaker,' etc.). She compares this book to Lee's rather restrained style in his earlier fiction: "Lee is revelling in his return to freedom. He is having fun."
