This story starts out with two polar opposites: Rebecca Morgan has lived in a cloistered environment of like-minded religious people and Race Spencer is an uneducated former gunslinger, afraid of little or nothing.
They meet after robbers have attacked and killed all of the religious folks except Rebecca (who ran away and hid). Saving Rebecca will come back and bite Race because now the robbers are determined to kill and maim until they get Rebecca's money. More than 1/2 of Race's cattle are killed and then the robbers start to pick off Race's employees.
After a slow start, this novel picks up momentum as Race and Rebecca find common ground. There were a couple of things that didn't ring true, but otherwise, this is a unique story that keeps the reader turning the pages.
