John Broderick, heir of the Clonmere estate, starts a copper mine on Hungry Hill. Immediately a Hatfield-McCoy type feud restarts with the Dovovans from whom the land had been taken a generation before: a feud that will trouble generations to come. The story follows five generations of heirs, each having their own tragedy. The mine finally closes during the fifth generation. One hundred years after the founding of the mine, Clonmere shares a fate with Manderley and Thornfield Manor.
