This is a very enjoyable historical cozy set in the small village of Kurland St. Mary. It takes place in 1806, just after the battle of Waterloo. I really enjoyed both of our main characters: Major Robert Kurland "lord of the manor" who is recovering from injuries received at Waterloo, and Lucy Harrington, eldest daughter of the village rector. There are two mysteries, one involving two missing servants, and the second has to do with a series of thefts from the village. What made this story shine for me was the character of Lucy, who articulates her concerns about her future, since she has been duty-bound to be the woman in charge of the rector's home and large family since the death of her mother some six or seven years previous. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
