Reading this excellent book by Amor Towles will take you through the first half of the twentieth century, through the eyes of Count Alexander Rostov, who is imprisoned (for lack of a better word) in the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. HIs crime? Being an 'unrepentant aristocrat'. The Count is charming, old fashioned and delightfully sentimental. The adventures he has, all while staying in the confines of the Metropol will enchant and bemuse you.
