This book is a little different from Feehan's other Carpathian stories. Dayan, of the music group the Dark Troubadours featured in another Feehan book, spots his lifemate, Corinne, one night when he's playing solo at a club. Dayan's brother (Dark Fire) Darius is one of the most dominant, overpowering Carpathians. Yet Dayan is one of the least dominant Carpathians I've read so far. He woos Corinne gently and takes his time revealing his vampiric abilities to her. She pretty much accepts him as he is unlike many of the other heroines in the other books. That may be due to Corinne's character which has been forged through a hard childhood as well as through her heart disease which is terminal. Her husband also died not long before the story opens and she's pregnant with his child.

Corinne's doctors fear for her health if she doesn't abort her baby but she is adamant that her baby should live. In the midst of this, Dayan enters her life. He cannot accept the fact that Corinne has a good chance of dying when she gives birth. She also knows her lifespan is to be short anyway, with or without giving birth. Dayan gathers the Carpathian community together to try to save Corinne's life. It could go either way, for her and the baby. I really got to see, again, the love and unity this Carpathian community has for each other. And though the men may appear too macho they are easily turned to mush towards their lifemates. Unless their lifemates are in danger which in most cases I could see the mens' point. That's why I love this series the most of all the paranormal romance series - because of the individual and community love. Of course, most of the plots are pretty steamy though "Dark Melody" is less so than the others. Needless to say, this is a recommended read.
