The novel opens with a three-man observer squad in action in South Dakota as the Chimera (space) invaders attack North America after conquering most of Europe and Asia. Readers accompany the protagonist, Ranger 1LT Nathan Hale (sic) during five eventful weeks at the end of 1951. This novel accompanies the relase of Insomniac Games' (Sony Play Station) third release in the Resistance series, "Retribution." However, it is not all scenes of blood and guts combat, ending with 1LT Hale joining the president's party as negotiations are attempted with the Chimera. As an experienced and able writer, Mr. Dietz provides a wothrwhile plot even for non-gamers. He has the advantage of being able to incorporate the formidable weaponry dreamed up by the staff and creative director of Insomniac.
I carried the book with me to read in short bursts on the train and bus and actually missed my stop three different times (by one stop only, not miles) so it is a quite captivating book.
