Another fast-paced Michael Bennett thriller from Patterson & Ledwidge. Although this was a page-turner, I was a little mixed on it. It seemed like the authors tried to cram too much into the story including Mike's return from California where he had been under witness protection in the last novel; his transfer upon returning to NYC to a lackluster outreach unit; his involvement with his family and nanny, Mary Catherine, including a custody dispute over one of Mike's adopted children; a gang of jewel thieves; and lastly, a depraved group who practice cannibalism! It seemed like the story took a long time to get going and then the ending seemed very rushed. I think the story of the cannibals could have been better developed and made more of a focus in the Hannibal Lecter vain. Then right when you think Mike and Mary Catherine are finally going to get together, something comes up to spoil it! Come on -- marry her already! Overall, I would mildly recommend this and I still think this is one of Patterson's better series. Hopefully, the next one will be an improvement.
