I'm usually not much for period pieces but I have to say I've enjoyed this one, and have two friends reading it simultaneously who said the same. It's a very interesting, if at times rather confusing premise, but it's fun to see how events which when first introduced seem totally unconnected end up being relevant later in the story. One of my friends had the complaint that for a book described as "erotically charged" by reviewers there was not enough eroticism for his tastes. I'm currently reading Volume 2 and only 150 pages in there is much more than in this volume.
All in all, I'm enjoying reading both volumes, although whether I'll end up keeping them or passing them on remains to be seen. If you want a mystery/science fiction adventure, I would recommend giving this one a try.
