After the comancheros murdered her mother and father, and raped her sister, Johanna is the sole provider for her and her pregnant sister. The good women of each community they have moved to have asked them to leave becuase of the shame of her sister's pregnancy. In desperation, and hope, Johanna accepts the job of housekeeper and takes off across country with her sister in tow to the Macklin ranch. There she encounters the mean-spirited owner, and the bitter son, who runs the ranch. Through her kindness and diligence, Johanna brings light and love into Bur's life, even though he does his best to ignore her.

A book from an earlier generation of Dorothy Garlock's treasures, but still enjoyable.
