"The Elk-dog People have two new members, Sky -Eyes and Woodchuck, once soldiers in the imperial French Army but now fully assimilated into the tribe. When the People are threatened, the two must use both their French and Elk-dog ways to save their new brothers and sisters.
A broken lance tip leads Sky-Eyes on a perilous journey to Santa Fe, where, because he speaks the language of the 'Hairfaces,' he helps his group trade pelts and deerskins for the iron metal of the Spanish. But trouble strikes when Sky-Eyes is accused of spying, and his lovely wife Pale Star, attracts the attention of a Hairface. For Sky-Eyes to save himself, his wife, and his tribe, he must summon up all of his white man's skills at political manuevering--and his newly learned ways of the People."
