This book offers good illustrations that clearly lead you through learning the twined knitting technique. There seems to be a lot of mystique attached to this technique, as if it is so different from any other type of knitting. In a way, it is just Fair Isle except that you twist the carried yarn into the stitches nearly every stitch. This makes a more durable fabric, which is firmly knit and very thick and warm. With a bit of trial and error, you could probably figure it out on your own, but why, when Ms. Ling has done so for you? A few tricks learned over centuries in Scandinavia make it easier, such as having the yarn rolled into one ball rather than trying to keep two balls from tangling.

The garment patterns are mostly very basic, boxy shapes with little shaping. Traditional details are included, one of which is a fake seam running up the back of the stockings, because once upon a time, woven sewn stockings were considered superior to knitted.

The best part of the book is the surface designs, which are created with color or knit/purl combinations or both. Think labyrinth and geometric. Any surface design may be applied to any garment pattern.
