Although it was published in 1974, it remains a classic--an exciting, practical, illustrated book for the beginning or advanced rugmaker. It displays modern as well as traditional design and techniques for hooked and knotted rugs and reveals in a brief colorful history the social significance and traditional aspects of the craft. Since part of the text includes material compiled from questionnaires sent to other rugmakers, Ms. Cuyler not only covers basic techniques, but in many cases suggests alternative methods. Clearly illustrated instructions are given for hand hook, punch needle, shuttle hook, tufting, latch hook, and rya.
Chapters include: Rugmaking Techniques; Rug Design and Color; Duplicating, Enlarging, and Transferring Designs; Introduction to Rug Hooking; Rug Hooking Equipment; Hand Hooking; The Punch Needle; The Shuttle Hook; Other Speed Hooks; The Latch Hook Technique; The Rya; and Dyeing Yarn and Materials. 140 pages
