Well written, quick read. However, I should have known I would have some difficulty with this book, being the animal lover that I am. Circuses, especially in the early part of the 20th century, had a reputation for animal cruelty as well as mistreatment of their staff and performers. Zoos were no different. I was a child in New York in the late 1940's and I remember visiting the Bronx Zoo and being terrified of the huge elephants, tugging on their chained feet and trumpeting so loudly. I am glad this book had an ending that leaves the reader feeling good, otherwise I would have hated it!
