A MOTHER RESORTS TO DRASTIC MEASURES IN ORDER TO BRING HER ENGAGED IMMATURE DAUGHTER INTO REALITY. SHE SENDS HER TO ITALY WITH AN UNCLE WHO INTRODUCES HER TO REALITY OF MARRIAGE IN 1846 BY ACQUAINTING HER WITH IREPUTIBLE LADIES AND THEIR PLIGHT VS SOCIETY LADIES. THIS MENTAL AWAKENING LEADS THE DAUGHTER INTO INDEPENDENCE AND A RELATIONSHIP WITH AN AMERICAN SHIP BUILDER WHO VALUES COMPETENCY IN HIS WOMEN. VERY GOOD BOOK.
