After turning over evidence that points to a U.S. Senator's participation in a drug ring, Neely Wallace is hiding out at her brother's home in a small Connecticut town. While taking her nephew trick-or-treating, Neely knocks on the door of Aidan Tremayne. Aidan has a dark secret. Hundreds of years ago, he was attacked by a beautiful woman and changed into a vampire. He hates his life and will do anything to go back to being a human. When he falls in love with Neely, he makes his quest to become human his number one priority.
I read this book when it was published in 1993. At the time, vampires who hated their circumstances was a popular trope. It's not a favorite of mine. Aidan moped his way through this book, vowing that he loved Neely too much to make her face life with a vampire. Neely didn't care that he was a vampire, but did make it clear that she didn't want anyone changing her into a blood sucking monster.
I liked parts of this book, but overall I can't recommend it. I still want to listen to the other books in the series. I remember liking them better than this one. My rating: 2.5 Stars.
