I read this while traveling in Mexico, and am sure that added a star to my rating. I liked it because it tried to get a better understanding of the problems of drug traffic in Mexico (having learned nothing from Prohibition), and the deeper cause, poverty and a lack of options - something it is easy to dismiss (though decreasingly so for many) if you live in the USA. It is not a preachy book, don't get me wrong from my "preachy" comment. I couldn't stop thinking that the author was crazy to get into the situations he did, and also glad for my reading's sake that he did. I will guess it isn't for everyone, but it is very hard to put down once you get into it.
