A fascinating and often sad story of the people who risked everything and took terrifying risks to flee the Nazis. And, it's a not-so-solemn testimony to the views of those Americans who should have felt differently to those fleeing tyranny and death.

Do we also forget the liner which cruised the Atlantic before the war, filled with people fleeing the Nazis? A liner no country would accept, forcing the ship to return to Germany, where the passengers were sent to the camps. My extensive reading of World War II history reveals the Allied governments knew what was happening in the Nazi concentration camps long before they admitted it. Why?

Sometimes you have to wonder how "un-American" we Americans are, even to other Americans. Much has changed, but we're still not perfect.

People are still fleeing to the U.S., and we often make it hard to get here. The problem is the conditions in the countries they are fleeing from. So it's not mostly our fault. How humanity can close its eyes to today's conditions in North Korea, Syria, Venezuela and other places often troubles me.

And then there are those who complain about our country, and there is some truthfulness to that, when they live in a country others would give years of their life to live in.
