I picked up this book skeptically. But was very pleasantly surprised. The story is gentle, emotional and lovingly told.

Of course, as a fan of The Waltons on TV, it took a bit to get used to John-Boy being called Clay-Boy here, and all the other siblings having different names. No Jim-Bob here. But I could tell which one would become musically inclined Jason, which one was feisty Mary-Ellen. All clearly drawn and vivid, even in this slim novel. Indeed, The Waltons on TV did the Spencers of this book proud. The TV series perfectly evoked the spirit of this book. And conversely, this book was the absolute perfect seed to sprout The Waltons. Both sides shine through.

A quick, pleasant and thoughtful read. No bloat, just a simple story very well told. And a nice Christmas read. So glad I had the chance.

**** Four stars!
