If you like your heroes dark and on the path to redemption -- then run, don't walk, and get this book. Best antihero-hero ever! Only one caveat -- He's introduced in Susan Grant's first book of this 3 book series, Your Planet or Mine. The books are self contained and don't necessarily need to be read in order. In fact, she pulls that feat off with extreme panache. But, reading Reef's story in order -- Book 1 and then Book 3 -- would add to the overall pleasure of this character.

A quick summary: The story is about the blacksheep of an old political family (think Kennedys) who is divorced with two kids and struggling to find her place in the world when constantly surrounded by media grabbing family members. She's asked to take on the role of temporarily storing Reef, an ex-assassin from another planet, who's sort of Terminator-like. Except, they explain, he's reformed, so don't worry.

I made this sound much sillier than it reads although Grant peppers her books with a good amount of humor. The stakes are high and the issue of children being forced into the military (or worse) is all too real both here (and possibly elsewhere in the galaxy).

The character growth is skillfully done and the sensual tension maintained in a very satisfying manner. More redemption than science fiction this story contains enough threat to keep one turning pages and enough heart to wish it went longer.
