This book is second in a series of very popular Western romances by Jodi Thomas. This tale is of Wes McLain, the eldest brother. After 4 long years in the Civil War (Union side), Wes has followed his brothers to Texas. There, he finds that he is penniless and his fiancée sends the family goons to make sure he understands she has no plans to marry a poor man.

Trying to get to his feet after the beating, Wes notices a cage. Inside is a slight woman in a raggedy dress; she is bruised everywhere. He finds that a preacher is going to use her at his revival - to get funds from the townspeople to `save' her.

Since childhood, Allie Catlin has been a victim of man's cruelty. She watched her family's slaughter, was captured by Indians and made a slave and now was used by a preacher spouting love but beating her hard and often.

Wes refuses to walk away from the cage and indeed pulls her from it; guns start firing and Wes is seriously hurt. Allie gets him on the horse and they escape. Wes explains that his brother is a doctor in Fort Worth and asks her to take him there.

Thus begins an unusual tale of two emotionally and physically damaged people trying to learn to trust. It isn't easy for either of them. This is my 3rd time reading this and I finally appreciate some of the author's subtlety. This is an unusual story; certainly worth your time!
