I really enjoyed the first book. This one picks up about a week later. So it is about new relationships, trusting someone who you don't know well etc. But more death, pain and problems and the person responsible might not be who you think.
BUT, Xandra is so extremely co-dependent. She rushes off and does things (mainly cause her magic makes her, but she does it even when it doesn't). She is too stupid to live! Ugh, usually that issue plagues YA heroines, but for some reason Xandra is racing around without regard to anyone else's feelings or her own safety. She wants to keep them all safe so she reacts without thinking and puts herself in crazy danger. It freaking made me nuts. Dummy.
There, I said it, I feel better now. So, I read the book quickly, but the character's actions just upset me so much I was mad at her for most of the story. She does learn, and regrets but her actions don't reflect that learning yet. The story is pretty dark, while there is romance and sexy times, the problems are murders and Adams doesn't hide the ugliness that goes along with murder and dark magic and the power some people wield over others through force.
I will continue with the series but hope the next book has her grow up more and maybe takes place after more time.
