If you're a fan of "44 Scotland Street," you will love this book. If you haven't read any Alexander McCall Smith, you will still enjoy this book.

It's an intertwined story of a group of New Yorkers and their lives over one year. The one common link between them all is dogs, either the love of them or the hatred of them. At first, I was thinking, "What is going on? When is this all going to make sense?" But finally, as the characters began interacting with each other, forming relationships and breaking them at the same time, I really began to care for some of them deeply. ++Spoiler alert!++ And I was quite sad when Beatrice got sick. I kept looking at the cover, thinking, "NOOOOOO! Not Beatrice!"

I finished reading this book last night and closed it with a satisfied sigh. The literary equivalent of a light summer meal: not heavy or particularly filling, but enjoyable and social.

A rare 5-star book for me!
