Three quarters of the book concerns her life in Pakistan before her shooting. It gives a good sense of the complex Islam world and the great restrictions placed on Muslim females. She also describes Pakistan's conflicted relationship with the United States.
The shooting did not "come out of the blue". The Taliban had made numerous threats to her and her father, and there were numerous murders and bombings all around them. So to me, what is amazing is their courage.
