Fantastic book -- it's too bad that it is no longer in print; 20 years ago I gave several copies of this to my friends for christmas.
The plot is simple enough, but the story is wonderfully twisted like hair in a braid: Modern times (1990s), shortly after Chernobyl and Tiananmen Square, and God has decided enough is enough. Per the Old Testament, this second time the world is to be destroyed by fire, not flood. To that end, God sends an angel to earth to subtly manipulate a group of humans from all over the globe to (unbeknownst to them) bring about The End.
Meanwhile, Satan learns of God's plans and sends his own agent to interfere, because he needs humans and sins to stay in business.
So you, the reader, are left in the odd position of rooting for the Devil. Very cool stuff!
