18th in the series, and still just as suspenseful and filled with historical detail as the first. I was a little taken aback to find this is another missing girl story, but the circumstances make it quite different. This time January can earn money instead of paying out. The different religions popping up, the spiritualists, and an appearance by another well-known historical figure were all top-notch. You can practically see New York as it was. Hambly's research is detailed and can be heartbreaking. There is a lot of darkness in this series but always a light shines through. Somehow January can find it within himself to see whites as individuals, although given all he's been through it is a struggle. Loved the last part, with January desperately trying to make his way through the maze of the house to save himself and Eve. Loved this whole book and will keep buying them as long as Hambly keeps publishing.
