I originally read this book when I was in high school, about 40 years ago, but I really didn't remember much of it. (Yikes!) Apparently it didn't affect me then like it did this time. This was a difficult read because it was so incredibly sad. It's the story of the Joad Family who head west during the depression, as many did, looking for work and the promise of a brighter future. Instead, they end up battered and abused. The pain, suffering, and heartbreak they endure is incredible, yet they continue to have hope, they carry on as best they can. This book is timeless in some ways... even today, the poor and unfortunate are taken advantage of by the more fortunate and by big business, and the land that sustains us, is abused. Although things change, some things stay the same. This book spoke volumes to me.
