Take a deep breath when you start this novel. As the plot winds up tighter and tighter, it is nearly impossible to breathe for the suspense. Tom Rob Smith wrote this sequel to Child 44, and it is brilliant. You are pulling for Leo all the way. He is a changed man, once a MGB officer who arrested and killed many people for the State. He is now an adoptive father to two young girls, whose parents he had shot. He is trying to make amends for his past terrible deeds done in the name of the government, Stalin's Russia. Leo must now rescue a man he had imprisoned. Not only does he regret that act, but the man's wife is holding his daughter hostage until her husband's return. All the intricacies of their situations, and the people who are affected along the way, make for a tense, thrilling story that kept me up until the wee hours of the night. I plan to read everything this young man writes! D.
