There is an "author's note" before you begin reading this book. It begins, "Dear Reader, if you have read "The Rice Mother" and desire a similar story then I must, in fairness, advise you to leave the book unread, for this is a dreadfully sordid world you seek to enter."
I wish I had followed her advise. This is an ugly story about ugly people.
