30 years ago, teenage Nealy Coleman fled her family Virginia home with an illegitimate infant. Her father treated Nealy and her two brothers with abuse and contempt. Nealy has become successful in thoroughbred racing in Kentucky. She never sets foot back on family land, but she returns when her dad is dying. The story also follows her rift with her 2 grown children.
