Mary Ann Evans, aka George Eliot, wrote about ordinary people during changing times. Her books are still read today because she had something important to say. Because Mary Ann was not pretty, she spent her time developing her mind. It is interesting that her father spent the money to educate his daughters; that was not the prevalent attitude at that time. Mary Ann chaffed under the Victorian rules for ladies. To counteract that, she strayed to more radical ideas and friends.

I really liked the writing of this life story; I thought the author got inside George Eliot's mind and motivations. This book is a nice mix of her life, education, career, intimate relationships, and works. There's enough of the story so the author could analyze Eliot's themes and thoughts. I thought this was a really well-balanced telling of a fascinating story.
