Madison Randolph left Texas and his large family a bitter and angry teenager 10 years ago. He is now a successful lawyer in Boston. He has come to Abilene KS to defend one of his twin brothers, Hen, who has been accused of murder. He is reunited with his oldest brother George and with Hen who is not too pleased that Madison is there is help him. Hen is still bitter that Madison walked out on the family and is willing to continue to hold a grudge even if it means he is convicted of a murder he did not commit.

Fern Sproull is a farmer's daughter who wears men's clothing, works like a ranch hand and goes out of her way to make men and women alike afraid of her. She is spitting mad that another of the Randolph clan has arrived to save the man she is convinced murdered her cousin.

Fern and Madison meet almost as soon as he steps off the train and sparks fly. Good and bad sparks. She fusses and fumes at Madison about being there to get a murderer out of jail.

And in the manner of all good romances, Fern and Madison soon develop feelings for each other but are afraid to express it. Both are hiding from secrets in their past that they are not willing to deal with at the present time. Over a period of time they are able to express their feelings and reveal the secrets of the past and then they were headed for their happy ever after.
