Touch of Power was my first read by Maria V Snyder and I keep asking myself why I didn't know of her before now! In this novel we meet Avry of Kazan, she is a healer and while it may sound like a good things it's not. She is in hiding because of her gifts, the people blamed healers for the plague that devastated their nation and to admit to being a healer is asking for a death sentence. Unexpectedly, she is abducted by a group of men who value her gift and want her to use it to heal their friend.

I was utterly fascinated with this book. The characters were excellently written and I connect with each one of them in a different way and for differing reasons. Avry was one of those characters that you just have to love. Sassy, smart, witty, sarcastic, and cunning....plus a little devious when she needs to be. The world of Touch of Power was put together in such a way that I did not find myself wondering why or how things got that way. Everything was explained and presented in a way that made it easy to read and understand. The plot was one that twisted and turned in ways that I thought I had predicted and later came to realize I didn't predict much of anything. I look forward to continuing Avry's story in the next book in 2013.

The only things keeping this book from 5 stars was that some bits of it were predictable. Overall the plot caught me off guard, but more than once I met a character and immediately knew what they were going to do or what they were up to. And I was disappointed to be correct on those occasions. I also had a hard time keeping track of everything. The plot moves very quickly and there are a lot of little subplots and nuances going on, and I found myself confused about just what was going on. A few minor detractors from an overall excellent book.
