I got and read this book after reading about the Congo in Barbara Kingsolver's book about
the Congo diamond trade (and much more). It is more historical than the literary fiction
of Kingsolver, but reveals some of the same underbelly of diamond mining and the Congo's history. A fascinating look at Belgium's King Leopold who adeptly made out like
a bandit while characterizing himself as a humanitariam. Has lesson for politicians' "slight of hand" for today.
