This was the first book by Kostova that I have read. And I am now an avid fan. For some reading 642 pages can tear at a reader's interest, but her writing style was suspenseful, historically satisfying, mysterious, romantic, and full of imagery.
I was frustrated as well as intrigued with the inception-like narration- going from the main character to her father and then his teacher. I enjoyed it because it showed the vulnerability of the three characters (first-person narration is my favortite), but I also found that it was confusing to keep track of who was doing the telling.
If you have been to Europe and the middle east, this book will bring you a sense of nostalgia, for Kostova illustrates the monuments and the architecture of whichever part of the world the character's travel to. I found it delightful!
If you have never been to Europe it does it's part of taking you on a tour of the world, explaining the cultures and the highlights of the townspeople. Either way it's a treat for imagery junkies like myself!
The only disappointment I leave with from this book is the abrupt end. It builds so much to the last hundred pages and then ends slightly flat. All in all, this book has been added to my top ten favorites. Kostova has a flare for writing and I can't wait to read more of her style.
