This was the most intriguing book I've read in a very long time. It would be too simple to describe it as an adventure or survival story. Hansen presents detailed observations of the people and ecology of Borneo. Before he begins his long trek, he partakes in a local celebration - similar to the Day of the Dead - where he is introduced to customs far different from any experience he has ever known. It was his complete lack of narcissism and his willingness to adapt to each situation that helped him endure the months of walking through the rain forest. He observes the negative effects of the unrestrained logging industry on the land and people. Since Hansen had these experiences about 25 years ago, one wonders what further changes have been made as industry makes its way further into the forest. It doesn't take much of a jump to understand the similar effects to the larger rainforest in South America. I am recommending this to everyone I know.
